Snow Report 29/12/22

featured in Snow Report Author Caro Blackwell, Destination Editor Updated

Happy New Year! It’s time for fireworks, mulled wine and torchlit descents. One of the busiest weeks of the year has arrived and crowds have descended on the slopes. It's that in between week when you don’t know what day it is, but that’s not really important here in the mountains when every day is a ski day!

Moderate snowfall is expected tonight with more falling during the day tomorrow and into the night, up to around 11 cm of new snow from around 23500 metres, below it will be rain. The temperatures remain quite mild for this time of year with the freezing level at around 2400 metres Friday night but up at around 3450 metres over the weekend. Next week the temperatures will drop a little down to -5°C on Tuesday at the top and the freezing level goes down to 1650 metres.

La Plagne has around 140cm snow depth at the Glacier at 3000 metres with around 10cm in the village. The avalanche risk levels are moderate to considerable so take care if you’re venturing off the pistes especially at altitude.

What's coming up

If you are heading out to celebrate New Year’s Eve - book now! The bars and restaurants only have limited space, the resort is full and some are offering 2 sittings. You will find it difficult to get into places if you haven’t booked in advance.

January is a great time to come and ski. The snow is in good condition, the slopes are quieter, accommodation is normally better value and flights are cheaper. It’s easier to get your favourite table in your preferred mountain restaurant in January. So if you haven’t planned your winter ski holiday yet, check out some of the great chalets and offers in La Plagne
