A snowy landscape with a sign that says

1. Chalet de la Roche Restaurant Review

I turned up late for lunch knowing that during half term you avoid the 12 til 2pm slot. I was surrounded by mix of English and French families, and couples of all ages. What was clear was the smiles on everyones faces here, and with the glorious sunshine and good food it's clear to see why.

Whether holidaying in La Roche or any of the other La Plagne villages I'd recommend popping by here on a sunny day whether for tanning, coffee or good value and tasty lunch.

The service was amongst friendliest I've experienced yet in the Alps and really made me and the tables around me smile. The waiter even laid an extra space opposite me for lunch saying that some nice young lady would surely come along and join me for a drink! Alas she never showed but I'm certainly not criticizing the restaurant for that!

The lunchtime menu was good value: Plat du jour or Fresh pasta choice plus dessert for 16.50 euros - bargain! The plat du jour was Bavette (beef), chips and salad, which was 13 euros without dessert.

The tarte tatin as the dessert du jour was so tempting, but due to time constrictions and my self imposed diet (in light of all my restaurant reviews of late) I had to pass on it. From the look of contentment on the English couples faces, and the fact they were almost coming to blows over the last few spoonfuls, I deduced it must be pretty special!

There's an outside terrace for 100 odd people, which is glorious in the sunshine. Located at bottom of la Roche 6 man chair, and next to a large car park, this ensures that people who don't ski in your group can pop down and join you.

Village Igloo Review

2. Village Igloo Review

On a so-cold-you can-see-your-breath Winter evening, I arrived in Plagne Villages as night was drawing in. I came in search of a new fine dining experience and I was not disappointed.

My journey began on a pedestrian track crunching through snow off piste towards an igloo. When asking local villagers if they knew where the igloo was, many looked confused and were not even aware an igloo existed just a mere fifteen minutes walk away.

As luck would have it, two kind strangers pointed me in the right direction. The lack of clear signposts at the beginning only added to the mystery and romance of this unusual place to dine out. Blacksheep’s igloo really feels like La Plagne’s best kept secret! Once I made it on to the right pedestrian track through the snow, small hand-painted glowing signs sporadically placed along the path lit the right way towards the igloo. When I finally reached my destination, it was well worth the walk.

Once inside the cold walls of the igloo, Vincent warmly welcomed me inside offering me snacks and a flowing supply of winter-warming mulled wine. While I waited for the fondue to be prepared, I kept warm by the fire just outside the igloo which was incredibly atmospheric hearing the fire crackle and spark amongst the still snowy soundscape.

Vincent also kindly gave me a tour of the man-made igloo which was far bigger than expected as it has capacity for up to 50 guests for a dining experience. Alongside the larger dining area, there are lots of beautiful little snug rooms to hang out in and soak up the amazing alpine atmosphere. If you so choose, there is also the opportunity for up to 27 guests to spend a full night in the igloo cosied up in your own private room in the igloo with luxurious fur blankets provided to stay warm throughout the night.

For dinner, fellow guests and I dined on a decadent five cheese fondue served with delicious bread and local meats. To end the night on a sweet note, we were served meringues and ice cream and a shot of homemade liquor made from locally grown herbs that is sure to put colour on your cheeks and keep you warm inside the igloo!

Conversation and music was free-flowing amongst happy guests all evening. When speaking to two lovely guests, I learned they travelled all the way from Marseilles for one night only so they could take part in this exciting igloo experience.

Whether you are staying locally in La Plagne or travelling from much further afield, it is absolutely worth the journey to the igloo because Blacksheep have really created something very special. Despite the igloo’s cold exterior, it provides the warmest, friendliest and most delicious unique dining experience on offer in La Plagne.

A restaurant experience in the igloo costs 49 euros per person, less for children under 10 years. You can also opt to spend the night too. Contact Blacksheep directly to book your own igloo experience, click on the website link above.

3. La Grolle Restaurant Review

Head to the bottom of the pistes in La Plagne centre and you'll find this great little restaurant with a huge sun terrace. With more than 30 seats it's a popular place with local instructors dropping in for a bite to eat, and has amazing views of all the mountains. On the day I was there it was really sunny, so the views were pretty great!

I ordered the Salad Landaise, which comes with duck meat, gizzards and egg. It was a good sized portion, very filling and there was a bread basket with the meal too, making this a good choice for skiers and boarders to recover a few carbs.

It's really easy to find the restaurant and it's popular with families and groups, even better if you're on the hop like me and just popping in for a quick bite.

As I said before the food is really good value for money - the plat du jour was 11.90 euros, and a main course is anything from 8-19 euros. If you're after a big hit of pasta, then they do a really good sized bowl for 11 euros or for something a bit smaller, a jacket potato and salad for 7.50 euros.

I would recommend coming here, especially when the service was so good as well, very friendly welcome and goodbye and the staff all seemed very relaxed and on top of things.

4. L'Arlequin Restaurant

Our resort reporter stopped into L'Arlequin restaurant having heard great things about the atmosphere and the food.. read her review below...

Decorated in a quirkily authentic French style L'Arlequin is warm and inviting. Cosy is definitely the word to describe it - it's tiny and if you turn around too quickly you are sure to spill your neighbours wine, but not to worry they are sure to take it with good humour.

The owners there are renowned for their hospitality and we were certainly not disappointed. Upon arrival we were seated swiftly and talked through the menu by the George one of the owners, who clearly knew his stuff and didn't mind at all how many questions we asked in our terrible French. Once we had ordered - both a cheese fondue and a pierrade (well why not) George himself brought to our table who proceeded to season and heat the hot rock with practised ease whilst talking us through what he was doing and why.

He taught us how to cook the meat and showed us how to do it properly, and indeed as you can see from the photos he was much more elaborate with his creations than we were with ours. The pierrade came with a side of beautifully cooked dauphinoise potatoes and the fondue with all the bread, salad and spuds you could want. We washed everything down with plenty of wine and rounded the meal off with creme brulee coated in genepi and flambeed at the table.

A wonderful meal in an extremely welcoming atmosphere, the one and only downside being struggling back up their ornate spiral staircase after far, far too much cheese!

A restaurant called la poya is covered in snow

5. La Poya Restaurant Review

Location
Les Coches

New for this season, La Poya feels like you're dining in a friend's chalet or house. It's got lovely decor with lots of modern touches, with wood and fur - it's very chic and the huge roaring fireplace really tops it off.

There's a cracking view over Mont Blanc range and cozy little corners to chill out in, plus the place doubles up as a piano bar later on, so it may be worth your while to take your time over your drinks to savour the atmosphere later.

It's a shame this restaurant was so quiet when i was there, as it was a great value lunch and the couple that greeted me very super friendly and offered great service.

For my starter I had a platter of 4 different kinds of charcuterie and gherkins with fresh bread - Very tasty and flavoursome. Then for the main, I chose the duck leg with creamed leek and gratin - Splendid, I'm lost for superlatives! - it tasted 10 times better than looked, and it looked pretty damn tasty!! A coffee rounded off whole lovely lunch perfectly.

Price wise you get really good value for money - Mains are between 15 and 30 euros, and the Plat du jour is only 8.50 euros. A starter and plat du jour is only 13 euros, or starter, plat du jour and dessert (3 courses) for only 16 euros. Wow - you won't find better value for 3 tasty courses!

Make the most of the stunning view. There's an outside terrace which is a real sun-trap too, so plenty of options depending on whether or not you want a cozy indoor spot or a bit of socialising and people watching on the terrace.

You'll find the Restaurant at the Piste Mont Blanc stop before tunnel and it is next door to the Les Coches tourist office (see the map).

Le Vins & 1 Restaurant Review style of cuisine

6. Le Vins & 1 Restaurant Review

Try out some great tapas on your trip to La Plagne!

They have great burgers served up by Camille Rey (who is also a ski instructor at ESF in Aime 2000 - he's in the photo above).

If you're hungry and up for a challenge the 'Ambitieux' burger is the one to go for, that is Seb's favourite. I recommend the 'Savoyard' with reblochon cheese. The chips are amazing too, lightly tossed in herbs.

The tapas are excellent, enjoy a good selection with a nice bottle of red.

Top tip: Sit up on high tables, the place mats are actually old records, which is very cool!

Le Bonnet restaurant review style of cuisine

7. Le Bonnet restaurant review

Location
Plagne Bellecote

Le Bonnet is a nice, refreshingly modern snack restaurant on the piste side in Plagne Bellecote.

The menu, although hailed as 'mountain street food' consists of the usual fare of burgers, pasta, hotdogs, sandwiches, waffles and paninis.

It's nothing fancy, but good value for money for a mountain restaurant and they serve a delicious hot chocolate too!

burger and chips

Outside is a modern terrace filled with plenty of seating and tables for those sunny days which seem to be eluding us this week, although we can't complain too much as we are getting fresh snow!

The restaurant building is light, modern and airy with big picture windows, which makes a nice change to the typically wooden, traditional chalet style restaurants found across the rest of resort.

We've been here twice already this week, it's our new favourite place!

You will find the restaurant at the bottom of the Arpette piste on the way back down into Bellecote.
