La Plagne Subli'Cimes 2017

An Easter festival of family fun in La Plagne

featured in Events reviews Author Stuart Hamilton, La Plagne Reporter Updated

If you’re in La Plagne over Easter, be sure to check out the annual Subli’Cimes celebrations being held across the resort from 5th to 18th April 2017.

Subli’Cimes is basically a big end of season party where the resort is transformed into a series of themed zones, each offering a range of free activities. It’s branded 6 Sommets (peaks) / 6 Sensations (parties) with attractions held over the resorts main summits from Montalbert’s Fornelet at 1970m to the Roche de Mio at 2700m.

La Plagne takes great pride in its reputation as a family-oriented area so expect to see a range of attractions suitable for young and old throughout the week. With so much to explore, you’ll be sure to find something that appeals.

The peaks are linked by an itinerary of blue runs, the idea being to encourage visitors to explore each of the zones and in turn discover more of the resort. Most of La Plagne’s ski terrain is an intermediate’s paradise, so Subli’Cimes is a great excuse to get out there and explore the very different, contrasting aspects of the ski area. Note: pedestrian access should be possible on some of the main peaks (resort staff haven’t actually confirmed which at the time of writing). Summits served by gondola and therefore suitable for pedestrians are noted below.

Roche de Mio, 2700 m / Adrenaline Zone

(Pedestrian access possible by gondola from Plagne Bellecôte)

Daily 10.00 – 15.00 (not including Sat 8th April and Sat 15th April)

Waterslide – You’ll have no doubt seen waterslides in videos but have you got what it takes to conquer La Plagne’s version? Ride on skis or snowboard over the 6m or 10m water pools. Just be sure to reach the other side otherwise a change of clothes could be in order.

Wipe Out – A 15m long course featuring 4 giant bouncy balls. Just like the TV show, jump from one ball to the next in the shortest time to be crowned champion. The course itself is a huge inflatable structure so soft landings are assured.

Rubber rings / giant airbag – The premise is simple in this one. Sit on a rubber ring, point yourself towards to a kicker, fly high into the air, land on a Big Air Bag. Repeat.

Live DJ – DJ Matt Jamieson will be playing live between 11.00 and 15.00 each day from 5th to 11th April.

two people in a mountain top sauna

Arpette, 2385 m / Zen Altitude Zone

Daily 10.30 – 16.00 (not including Sat 8th April and Sat 15th April)

2 Jacuzzis – 2 jacuzzis set up at the top of Arpette with views over Mt Blanc. Each jacuzzi accommodates six people - one is under an inflatable igloo. Note children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Cosmic sauna – Panoramic glass bubble sauna with space for 5 people. Showers and changing area on site – plus loan of towels possible. Remember to take your swimming costume.

Amma seated massages – On-hill massage service.

Relaxation area – Ice furniture, deck chairs, hammocks, music and tea/infusion tasting.

Discovery workshops – Improve or learn Zen skills including Yoga, Tai Chi, Gi Gong, Sophrology, Do In and active meditation. Note: consult the official brochure for schedule.

Grande Rochette, 2505 m / The Vikings Zone

(Pedestrian access possible by Funiplagne gondola from Plagne Centre)

Daily 10.00 – 16.00 (not including Sat 8th April and Sat 15th April)

A range of activities related to the time of the Vikings including archery, axe throwing, javelin, dying skills, a bracelet workshop, long ship course and other lessons in history. Consult the official brochure for schedules and more information.

inflatable dinosaur

La Rossa, 2380 m / The time of the Dinos Zone

Daily 10.00 – 16.00 (not including Sat 8th April and Sat 15th April).

A variety of attractions and workshops themed around the time of the dinosaurs and the Mesozoic period. Attractions include an Immersion zone with snow sculptures, timeline frieze, life-sized dinosaurs, a large dinosaur’s egg and a special soundscape zone where you can hear the sounds of the dinosaurs.

The area also offers an Animation zone complete with workshops and games relating to dinosaurs and palaeontology, the Velociraptor challenge, inflatable Jurassic play area, Discovery Space with fossils, Toboggan track and daily Dino Quiz.

Also on Sunday April 16th, there will be a dinosaur egg hunt.

Note, La Rossa summit is in the Champagny sector of the resort. To access you need to drop down either Les Verdons South side (variety of blues and reds) or the long Levasset blue (accessed from Roche de Mio) and then take the Borseliers chair followed by La Rossa chair. This area gets sun all day and has spectacular views over the Vanoise glaciers - including the towering 3855m La Grande Casse. Despite being more isolated and harder to get to, this sector of the resort is highly recommended. The views alone are worth the trip.

Fornelet, 1970 m / Fairyland Zone, the land of stories and legends

(Pedestrian access possible by gondola from Montalbert)

Daily 10.30 – 16.00 (not including Sat 8th April and Sat 15th April).

As the name suggests, this zone is dedicated to sorcery, witchcraft and fairytales – definitely one for the kids. Attractions include the Polar Express snow train, the Big Wooden Wheel of Dreams and sweet potions tasting with the Sorceress of the Snows. Kids can become a troll, elf, prince or princess with face painting sessions.

Note: Attractions are closed between 13.00 and 14.00 each day – presumably to allow the Elves a spot of lunch and a pint.

Subli’Cimes is a great excuse to get out exploring the huge La Plagne ski area while also taking in some family-friendly attractions and activities along the way. As a resort, La Plagne is geared almost entirely to families and beginner/intermediate level skiers and snowboarders. Subli’Cimes is yet further evidence of how well it caters for both. Get along for an interesting and varied day out, suitable for all ages.
