La Plagne Snow Report: 16th December 2011
Lots & lots of fresh snow in La Plagne. It just keeps on falling...
What a week we have had in La Plagne, non stop snowfall for the past four days and it seems to be getting heavier. The forecast is predicting it to ease off by the morning with heavy snowfall continuing through the night. The forecast was stating 27cm today but I can confirm 100% we have had much more than this up in Plagne Centre. I would say it is more like 50-60cm that has fallen today. Another 17cm is predicted for tomorrow. Then it looks like it will ease off during Sunday. Tonight the temperature is expected to drop as low as -10, then tomorrow afternoon we are looking at a high of -11 through until Sunday afternoon. We will see sub zero temperature of -20 on Sunday night. If you are in La Plagne for the coming week, Monday is looking like a magnificent day for skiing and boarding with sunny skies and temperatures hover between -11 and -16. So, be prepared for the cold weather and bring lots of warm clothing.
Today saw lots of new arrivals in La Plagne as coach loads of holiday makers were brought up the mountain for the opening week of the season. How lucky they are to find all this snow! No word of a lie, I spent 45 minutes this morning digging my car out as the snow surrounded my car half-way up. Later on in the day, my car was completely covered in fresh snow. Good luck digging yours out. On the main road today between Plagne 1800 and Plagne Centre there was a mini avalanche and a huge pile of snow covered the road so do be careful if driving to the resort.
Wednesday was a busy day for me as I finally managed to get out on the mountain for a full day's skiing and was even the first on the Grande Rochette Gondola. Conditions at the top were pretty grim, practically a white out but this didn’t stop me doing a few blues (Mira/Ramy), a red (Kamikaze) followed by a steep powdery black run (Rochette). The pistes were almost deserted and it was a great feeling to be the first down a few runs on fresh powder snow!!!
In the evening I was lucky enough to experience a free go on the Skidoo which I would most certainly advise going on, the scenery was amazing and they're pretty quick too.
This Wednesday, if you are in resort then you can celebrate La Plagne’s 50th anniversary which is set to be an amazing event. The show starts at 6pm in Plagne Centre with lots going on for all the family followed by a spectacular fireworks display. Don’t miss it!
So, hopefully Monday is looking like a cold blue bird sky day which I will most certainly be taking full advantage of. Look out for my next report on Tuesday if you are heading to La Plagne in the next few week as I will be adding lots of tips and advice of where to go and where not to go, plus a selection of photographs for you to see the fabulous conditions we are currently experiencing in resort.
Interesting fact for the day: we have already seen more than half of last year’s total season snowfall and the season hasn’t even officially started until tomorrow morning.
