Another week of changeable weather here, warm and mild temperatures, followed by rain and snow, then a few clear days. Those pisteurs have still been maintaining and grooming the slopes fabulously to give us great ski conditions daily. The lower slopes are not in bad shape considering the lack of snow and all are mostly still open and the connecting slopes are still skiing well. Higher up the snow is in surprisingly good condition with typical spring conditions, icy in the early mornings and softening up and a bit slushy from around 2pm. During the last week there was significant avalanche activity through the Northern Alps, mostly triggered by skiers. A new surface layer of snow not bonded to the already weak layer of snow below is the main cause for these avalanches. Take heed of the avalanche warnings in La Plagne before even considering venturing off piste.
In La Plagne the weather looks set to change again at the end of this week and by Friday evening much colder temperatures will be back, freezing levels much lower down to around 1200m by Sunday. Winds will generally be light although they could be up to about 20 kms on Sunday. Current forecasts are predicting a good snowfall during Sunday and into Monday as much as around 30cms. Hopefully these predictions are correct, as this will really help the snow conditions ready for the Easter holidays.
