Snow Report, 4 January 2024
Happy New Year everyone! So probably while you were enjoying the fireworks in La Plagne it was snowing! This is what we were waiting for over new years eve but it wasn’t quite enough! However…to welcome the new year properly, Wednesday night we saw fairly strong westerly winds and a decent snow fall of around 24cm and it’s not finished yet. This weekend we have some great snowfall forecast.
Exciting news, this week we have seen fresh snow already in La Plagne. Thursday is clear and mostly sunny, but from Friday through to Sunday we are looking at around 20cm of snow falling, the heaviest of this will be on Friday night. Winds will remain mainly light north, north easterly. The freezing level by Sunday will be down to about 600m, with temperatures hovering around -10°C.
So after this weekend on the quiet January slopes you will enjoy some fabulous powder days as it’s looking like sunshine from Tuesday. The avalanche risk before the latest snow was around 2 but this will likely rise to 3 or even 4 out of 5 in places of heavy snowfall at high altitude, so as always don’t venture off-piste without the correct kit or before checking the days weather advisory in resort.

Insider tips from the pistes
If you're travelling and out skiing this week:
- Pack a variety of equipment - highlight and low light goggle lenses and layers! Temperatures have been down to -14C so wrap up warm.
- Snow chains will be essential to get up the roads this weekend, winter tyres are obligatory here in the Alps departments. Make sure your car is well-equipped to travel safely.
- When skiing during the snowfall, if possible head between the trees as the branches slow the snowfall and improve visibility.
- Keep up to date on the days weather and lifts opening/closing as times can change when the weather closes in.
- Check the avalanche risk and absolutely don't head off-piste if you don't have the correct information, equipment and guidance.
January is a fabulous time to ski in La Plagne. The snow is good, the slopes are quieter, accommodation is normally better value and flights are cheaper. It’s easier to get your favourite table in your preferred mountain restaurant in January too. Check out What's on in January in La Plagne.
