Snow Report, 9 January 2024

By Caro Blackwell, Updated

It’s been a changeable week so far in La Plagne, we did get the promised snow over the weekend, specifically on Friday evening which made for a great powder weekend, although we didn’t see much of the sun. The weather this week is changing though. Tuesday is the coldest day of the week with the lowest freezing level at around 500m and maybe a light snowfall late afternoon into this evening.

From Wednesday this week we’ve got some calm and sunny days coming up even though it will remaining pretty cold, with temperatures not getting above -1. No snow is forecast until Monday next week when we may get around 5cm. After that it’s too far out to predict accurately. The snow depths over around 1800m are above average for this time of the season and recent snowfall has really freshened up the snow giving excellent off-piste conditions.

The avalanche rating is currently around 3 out of 5. Be aware on north facing slopes over 2000m as you may find some instability due to a buried weaker layer beneath the new snow. As always don’t venture off-piste without the correct kit or before checking the daily weather advisory in the resort.

Top tips if you are coming skiing this week

  • Conditions are going to be changeable this week so you’ll want low light and sunny lenses
  • It's going to be quite cold too, so wrap up warm! Layers will work well this week.
  • Bring your suntan lotion and apply regularly, the sun in the mountains is very strong.
  • While the pistes are still quiet, if you head out during the lunch break between 12:00 and 14:00, it is often like having a private mountain to explore!
  • Saturday is the day to grab a table for lunch on a sunny terrace!
  • Check the avalanche risk as it's considerable at the moment and absolutely don't head off-piste if you don't have the correct and up to date information, equipment and guidance.

There's still time to take advantage of January cheaper flights and good deals on accommodation. Check out what's on in January in La Plagne.
